Around Akron, they are calling it "The Play." The Zips stunned Western Michigan, 39-38, by scoring 15 points in the final five minutes Saturday night, capped by an incredible 89-yard punt return on the last play.
Two things make this play special. First is a blind pitch by the Zips' Alphonso Owen to Andre Jones, who grabs the ball and races to the end zone. The second is the call of the play by Steve French.
Sunday Morning Quarterback is all over this, noting that the Akron Beacon-Journal didn't even send a reporter to Kalamazoo, instead relying on an Associated Press story. The paper followed with a story about French's call for Tuesday's editions.
Update: Bronco coach Bill Cubit said he received an apology from Mid-American Conference officials because a block in the back call was not made on the play.

It's a shame - but the Akron Beacon Journal is in serious limbo with no real financial resources. Thhey have even lost their best sports writer to the Cleveland Plain Dealer - Terry Pluto.
