Did Clausen Have Elbow Surgery?

Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen, who has been bothered by bone spurs in his right (throwing) elbow, recently underwent surgery on the elbow, according to the site Log's Blog.

"I recently found out from a trustworthy source who I cannot name (read: doctor) that ND freshman QB Jimmy Clausen recently underwent elbow surgery. Supposedly he will miss the entire season.

"Whether that means the recovery period covers the length of the season or ND will choose to redshirt him is unclear. With Clausen out the two leading candidates for the job would be Demetrius Jones and Evan Sharpley. I hope this is wrong."

Clausen, regarded as the top quarterback recruit in the country, graduated from high school early and enrolled at Notre Dame in January. His father, Jim Clausen Sr., told the Chicago Sun-Times in March that his son's injury was discovered last summer.

"We've been aware that this was an issue," the elder Clausen said in March. "He played 15 games with the problem this past season, so you know he's a competitor. But I think at the end of the season, he started to lose some velocity.

"At some point, if it's causing that much discomfort, we'll see what other option is best."

Last week, quarterback Zach Frazer, who was upset at being told he was the No. 4 quarterback entering fall practice, expressed a desire to transfer. Miami, Louisville, Rutgers, East Carolina and Connecticut were said to be the schools interested in Frazer.

What the freak is "Log's Blog"? Come on, Wiz, what kind of source is that? Even if this ultimately turns out to be true, linking to that blog is weak.

For the record, I hope it's not true because I want to see Clausen get slobberknocked by the Penn State defense on September 8th.

Not true. This has been verified with the coaching staff.

Stat of the Day: Jimmy Clausen is actually older than Texans' first round pick Amobi Okoye. I hate that Clausen guy already.

I'm no Doctor, and I don't play one on the internet, but I don't think surgery to remove bone spurs is that serious, if he even had surgery. My guess would be that if he needed it he would do the surgery right after the Spring game and he'd be back in place by the time Fall practice starts.

ESPN.com is reporting it, so it must be true...

Wonder if they plucked it off of here (or the Deadspin link) or if they actually found out from their own source...

When was the last time Notre Dame football was actually relevant? I'll tell ya, I'd rather watch Boise or TCU than the Domers. At least they play up to the competition, which is more than can be said for the Irish!

If ND is so irrelevant, what is the point of taking time to post about them? Seems pretty strange

Tracking records reveal numerous visitors to this site from Bristol. Not that they would ever acknowledge it, outside of Bruce Feldman. ... :-)

Might consider changing your link from "Phantom Elbow Surgery" to "Jimmy Clausen has elbow surgery" now that the mighty ESPN has confirmed the story.

The site you linked to (Log’sBlog) had the story up a full day before anyone else.

Understand that ESPN and other major media outlets will never find out confidential information before people who have connections to a university or any other professional organization.

DaWiz your ESPN conspiracy theory is exciting, but ridiculous. Trust me!

Lastly, Irish fans don't think you are out of the woods yet. ND’s AD dept. would have said Clausen is ready for fall practice regardless of the magnitude of his injury, unless they were 200% sure he wasn’t going to be able to suit up this year. I hope he is ready to go, but we shall see.

Certainly all the credit goes to Log's Blog on this one. They broke the story.

Speaking of which, the use of "a source" is tossed around -- shall we say -- liberally at ESPN. :-)

Thanks alot for the link Wiz, I love the site, have been here a few times before. I was definetly surpirsed someone like you would catch this since we're soo new, but I can assure you we aren't just looking to make waves. I love the ESPN story, and I totally agree that ND is going to downplay this as much as possible, if they came out and said Clausen is done, 25% of ND nation would have a heart attack. Thanks again

ND is over, and it's sooooo nice.

Because they are thrown on the front page of everything. It's rather hard NOT to read about the Irish when the media outlets insist on making them headline news, whether they deserve it or not.
