Sports Illustrated has issued an apology and printed a correction in its Feb. 5 edition for an item that appeared in the Jan. 15 edition stating that "A West Virginia fan was photographed defecating on a seat in the Georgia Tech band seating area during the Gator Bowl." As first reported by the Wiz on Jan. 12, the item was part of an Internet hoax. Later that day, Sports Illustrated acknowledged it had been duped. However, no correction had been issued until this week's edition. "We've clarified everything in the issue that closed Monday," SI executive editor Terry McDonnell told Jack Bogaczyk of the Charleston Daily Mail. "We're very happy to apologize. We were wrong, and very embarrassed. We were just wrong; it was stupid, a horrendous mistake. People got into trouble [at SI]. We regret all of it."
