It's Time Bobby, It's Time ...

A mediocre team coming off a 7-6 season with 10 players suspended for the first three games because of an academic scandal. Twelve losses in two seasons. A once-proud program without a 10-win season since 2003. Michael Cunningham of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel writes that it's time for Florida State's Bobby Bowden to call it quits.

"It's not fair for Bowden to stay at FSU and run a mediocre program, but he gets to decide what mediocre means. You can say that's his right considering what he's done for the program since 1976 but, darn it, it's time to move on."

Cunningham adds: "Perhaps I'm being too harsh because I'm not emotionally invested in the Seminoles. Maybe I don't have the proper perspective because I was barely more than a baby when Bobby took over this program.

"But, darn it, I'm just going on what Bowden says. The Seminoles are putting out mediocre football teams, so it's not fair for him to stay."

With FSU's first three games being against Western Carolina, UT-Chattanooga and Wake Forest, it seems likely that the worst they come out of those first three games even with 10 players suspended due to the academic scandal is 2-1. And if in the unlikely event they beat Wake Forest (which with the game in Tallahassee is maybe not as unlikely as it would be otherwise), 3-0 is not outside the realm of possibility.

Colorado is also in the heat and humidity of Florida with that game at Jacksonville at the end of September. Plus Colorado is not necessarily a world beater to begin with. 3-1 or 4-0.

Is Miami back this year? Well, the game is in Miami which (if anyone shows up to attend) makes it harder. Still, go with the 'Canes. 3-2 or 4-1.

NC State? Very winnable away game. 4-2 or 5-1.

Va Tech? Va Tech is rebuilding this year. Still, the game is in Blacksburg. 4-3 or 5-2.

Ga. Tech? I think Paul Johnson's scheme will work just fine...after a year of getting it installed. This is a "W" for the 'Noles. 5-3 or 6-2.

Clemson? Well, I dunno here. Toss a coin. My guess is that the second year of Jimbo Fisher and Chuck Amato shows up and gets Bobby's Seminoles a win against Tommy's Tigers. 6-3 or 7-2.

Boston College couldn't beat FSU last year in Boston. I don't see BC beating 'em this year in Tallahassee. 7-3 or 8-2.

Maryland is another likely "W" for the 'Noles. 8-3 or 9-2.

The season ends with the Florida Gators. Dang if I know how to call this one without seeing what kind of "D" Urban Meyers squad brings this year. Still, the Gators are likely too much and the last home game ends on a down note with a loss in Tallahassee. 8-4 or 9-3.

I actually expect that Bobby Bowden is much more likely to retire after a relatively successful season than he is following a season with a record close to .500, so anyone that wants him out should probably be rooting for that 9-3 finish. Heck, with Jimbo and Chuck as assistants, 10-2 is possible. We'll see. In any case, it may be time for Bobby to go. But maybe not just quite yet.

Bobby and JoePa are going to continue coaching until one of them dies. And then the other one will keep coaching as long as it takes to hold the record for most wins.

1st anon,

why dont you allow someone without emotion BREAKDOWN fsu'S "possible" record ...

WCU = WIN
UTC = WIN
WFU = LOSS
Buffs = WIN OR LOSS
UM = LOSS
NCSU = LOSS
VT = LOSS
at GT = WIN OR LOSS
CLEMSON = LOSS
BC = WIN
at MARY = LOSS
FLORIDA = LOSS

so, 5-7 at best and 3-9 at worse. 2 of the games should be easy peezy japanezy!

embarrasing.

3rd Anon, dunno why you think there is emotion in my comment. I'm not an FSU fan. Auburn is my team. But since you're speaking of emotion, how did you let yours get away from you so bad? Why is it that you think an NCSU team that FSU thumped last year wins this year? And you think Maryland wins against FSU this year? Maryland? Puhlease.

We'll see come the end of the year. You pick FSU 5-7 at best. I pick 'em 8-4 at worst. Don't forget those numbers.
