USC caught a break early when the Sun Devils' Terry Richardson fumble a punt that led to a Trojan touchdown. Arizona State fought back behind quarterback Rudy Carpenter, who passed for 124 yards and ran for 49. Sun Devil coach Dirk Koetter made a blunder late by punting, much to the delight of Traveler, the USC mascot.
