New Rules and a Lawsuit in Orlando
Central Florida played its first home game since the tragic shooting death of campus police officer Mario Jenkins, and officials had their first test of new policies designed to cut down on illegal drinking. Witnesses have now given a chilling account about the timeline leading to Jenkins' death. It appears police and tailgaters have been at odds for many years in Orlando. A woman has filed suit against the city and two officers alleging they engaged in false arrest and malicious prosecution during a Central Florida tailgate on Oct. 25, 2003. Police used a Taser on the woman after knocking her to the ground. The Orlando Sentinel provides photos from a video of the incident. Absolutely horrific tragedy at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando. I regularly attend UCF games and am familiar with the tailgate lot where this occurred. There is a few groups of students who quite frankly care nothing of UCF sports or the football game. They simply come to drink and party, and never go to the stadium to watch the game. It was these people that knocked over officer Jenkins and also were hitting him on the head with beer bottles. When he was taken in the ambulance the first thing that perplexed the paramedics was the number of cuts, lumps, and bruises on the top of the officers head. These students are now being pursued and will be charged with some type of felony that led to the death of this officer. Hopefully they will be put away for a long time.
