Notre Dame (plus 7) — The Irish ran for 275 yards last Saturday against Pittsburgh. Michigan gave up 211 rushing yards against Northern Illinois. Michigan started giving up chucks of yards late last season (Ohio State and Texas). Lloyd Carr promised changes in his defense, but the Wizard believes the Wolverines' problems stopping the run cannot be solved in one week.

Northwestern (minus 2.3) — The Big Ten has been cleaning up thus far and thinks this number is too low. Although Northern Illinois had its moments against Michigan, the Wizard is sticking to his belief that this had more to do with Michigan's defense than the Huskies' offense. Plus, the Wildcats are at home.

Cincinnati (plus 17.5) — The Bearcats struggled to beat Eastern Michigan, but did display the ability to run the ball, currently ranking No. 8 nationally. Penn State started fast, then staggered to defeat South Florida. Bottom line is we think it's too many points.

North Carolina (plus 12) — The logic here simply is that Georgia Tech will have a letdown after its biggest victory in recent memory. Yes, the Tar Heels have yet to play and are on the road, but the belief here is that the number is too high.

Nebraska (minus 6.5) — Wake Forest lost at home to SEC doormat Vanderbilt. Nebraska struggled against Maine. Frankly, I can't make much of an argument for the Cornhuskers, but if they can't cover this small number and have slipped this much, Callahan might be looking for a new gig by season's end.

Arizona State (minus -1.5) — The Sun Devils have played a game and the Tigers will be rough around the edges, plus the quarterback situation is unsettled. ASU has played some of its best football in recent seasons in September, then faded. Last year, for example, the Sun Devils pounded Iowa, 44-7, in a night game at in Tempe, 44-7. A hunch that this is a similar setup.

Virginia Tech (minus 20) —The Hokies were one of the most impressive teams in Week 1, beating a game N.C. State on the road. Duke was losing to East Carolina, of all teams. I can't imagine the Blue Devil defense being anything close to that of the speedy Wolfpack. A big number, yes, but a manageable one.
