Thursday Evening Quarterback

He's 2-0 and has plenty to say. The Wizard offers his unique critic of Thursday's games in the comments section.

Minnesota-Tulsa
Laurence Maroney is the best running back in college football. The Gophers have two big receivers. The line is terrific. The defense is improved, so what's the problem? Quarterback Bryan Cupito is the same quarterback he was last fall. When Big Ten play rolls around, everybody will stack the line and turn Cupito into the playmaker. Frankly, I don't think he can consistently deliver. One more thing: What are they doing playing football after midnight in Tulsa? Come to think of it, why are they playing football at Tulsa?

Central Florida-South Carolina
The Gamecocks probably will be a good team to bet against. Having Spurrier, a darling of the media, on the sideline has inflated the spread. They didn't cover at home against Central Florida, losers of 16 in a row. Plenty of people in the SEC want a piece of Spurrier's hide and if given the chance, will try to bury the Gamecocks. The Knights? They will be winning some games soon.

Temple-Arizona State
Tough to gauge because the Owls are so lousy. I'd be stunned if they won two games. The question becomes, how many points will they get each week? Arizona State will give LSU a good fight at Baton Rouge, having played a game with more than a week to prepare. LSU was a 12-point favorite at the Hilton on 7/25. That number is sure to come down.

Oregon-Houston
A popular opinion has been this: USC's quest for an undefeated season will end Sept. 24 at Eugene. I'm not buying it. The Ducks gave up touchdown passes of 70 and 62 yards. What will USC's big-play offense be capable of? The word on the street is that teams will be able to run against USC, but Oregon's running game isn't its strength. As far as Houston, it can score, but can it stop?

I didn't see enough of Idaho-Washington State or any of Vanderbilt-Wake Forest and have no opinion. Can anybody help us out?

And why wasn't I all over Connecticut (-17) against Buffalo?
