A 5-2 Start for the Wizard

The man has garnered enough strength to pull himself off the couch and talk about the weekend's games and his brush with perfection. Check the comments below.

A terrific start to the season. Did you see Chuck Amato's shades? I wonder if Bobby Bowden will break out one of his snazzy safari hats Monday night and try to one-up his former assistant.

If you scroll down the page to "Week 1" and click on "comments," you will see who I played this weekend. Here's the Reader's Digest version for those who are too lazy (fine by me) and don't care (now this I have a problem with).

Winners: Minnesota, Arizona State, Alabama Birmingham, Arizona and Air Force. Losers: Rutgers and Texas A&M.

Rutgers had a kicker named Ito and he missed four times. Judge Ito could have done better. If he misses three, I'm taking a winning ticket to the window. How low must one set the bar?

And the Clemson kicker Dean was fantastic. No pressure, but when I pick the Tigers, you better maintain these high standards ....

Our goal is to predict the winning side 60% of the time. If you can do better, start sending me your picks or -- better yet -- post them in the comments section from week to week for the world to see. And give some sound reasons why you choose a side.

Now an overview:

Not everybody can walk into Oklahoma Memorial Stadium on a September afternoon and beat the No. 7 Sooners. And certainly not every Western Athletic Conference team. But Texas Christian was up to the task.

Oklahoma needs an offensive line and a quarterback. Outside of that, the Sooners look terrific. Oklahoma travels to UCLA in two weeks. Can Stoops patch it up to get past the Bruins? OU was an eight-point favorite over UCLA at the Hilton (listed under the headline, "2005 Games of the Year" toward the bottom of this blog). That number will be coming down.

Illinois, Kentucky and Arizona made terrific comebacks, with only Illinois winning. I zeroed in on the Arizona game Friday and some of the comments Charles Durrenberger of the Arizona Daily Star stated on the paper's blog are on the money, which is what we care about most.

Of Arizona, he said, "the offense seems to have the ability to eat up chunks of yardage when they catch the ball. The defense is in trouble if the front four don’t start making a push. Zero sacks Friday night."

Of the Utes, Durrenberger said he "was impressed with Utah’s running game, but a team that can disrupt the line of scrimmage will beat them."

It's difficult to get a gauge on Arizona State and Iowa, but I think a game between their opponents (Temple and Ball State) would be a doozy. I'm not sure Temple can win two games. And how many points do the Owls require to get a cover? As for Ball State, alum David Letterman better fatten up those checks.

USC appears to be what we stated earlier. Unstoppable offense with a defense that bends. Will it break? The Trojans are No. 1 and they look suited for the role, but let's consider those 437 yards they gave up and 97 yards in penalties.

Northern Illinois had more rushing yards than Michigan and averaged 6.6 a pop. As the WWE's Carlito says, "That's not cool." Michigan's defense appears suspect, as it was late last season.

Tennessee is not the No. 3 team in the country. The Volunteers didn't come close to covering.

Is Georgia Tech's defensive front that outstanding, or is Auburn not capable of running the ball?

Notre Dame stunned me. I was of the opinion the talent level had dipped at Notre Dame. As for Pittsburgh, what does this say? I wouldn't be surprised to see Stanford and Walt Harris win more games than the Panthers and Dave Wannstedt.

Washington is improved from the sorry bunch they were last season, but Air Force remains one of the most under-rated teams in the country against the spread.

California has quarterback problems. The starter got hurt, the second-string guy threw 10 incompletions in a row and the third-string guy was playing fullback not too long ago. This will be a good test for Tedford.

Why wasn't I all over Boston College?

That's all for the moment. Back to the couch.
