Iowa senior cornerback Antwan Allen's streak of consecutive starts has ended at 38. He was suspended for Saturday's opener against Ball State (Iowa is a 38.5 favorite). He was convicted Aug. 18 of assault causing injury from an incident Nov. 28. Allen's sentencing is Friday and Coach Kirk Ferentz said more punishment could be forthcoming.

Donovan Woods has been named starting quarterback at Oklahoma State but Coach Mike Gundy said Bobby Reid also will play against Montana State (no line). Woods' hold on the job appears to be anything but secure. "They were so close. I wasn't even going to (name a starter) until the game," Gundy said. "The offensive staff was tired of messing with it. They wanted to go ahead and name a starter, so that's fine." The indecisive Gundy, in his first year as coach, also appeared to fumble the communication handoff when Woods, asked later, said he had not been informed that he would start. "Coach hasn't told me anything," he said. Opps.

Washington Coach Tyrone Willingham has yet to name a starting quarterback for Saturday's game against Air Force (plus 2.5) at Seattle's Qwest Field. The choices are Isaiah Stanback or Johnny Durocher. Stanback did little to distinguish himself last year. Durocher is a transfer from Oregon and has yet to take a snap in a college game. As they say, when you have two quarterbacks, you have no quarterback.
