Reporters' Notebooks

Scott Ferrell, Shreveport Times: There is a possibility of a split national title when the Bowl Championship Series title game ends Monday night.

Tim Griffin, San Antonio Express-News: Penn State and Texas A&M is not good theater. Television ratings for the Alamo Bowl were down 55%, lowest for the bowl since the first game in 1993.

Jeffrey Flanagan, Kansas City Star: A lengthy list of screwups by Pat Summerall during the Cotton Bowl telecast.

Greg Auman, St. Petersburg Times: The wife of South Florida's Ben Moffitt, now separated from the linebacker, said she had taken multiple online courses for her husband and written papers for his college classes to keep him eligible to play football.

Brandon George, Dallas Morning News: Oklahoma State quarterback Bobby Reid, the focus of a three-minute tirade by Mike Gundy toward a reporter, is leaving Stillwater, according to the player's mother.

Chris Dufresne, Los Angeles Times: The B in BCS stands for boring. Instead of great matchups, we got New Year's Day BCS games that proved nothing.

Scott D. Pierce, Deseret Morning News: The Mountain West Conference TV picture is muddled further with CSTV being swallowed whole by CBS.

Dick Harmon, Deseret Morning News: Brigham Young has a hole in its 2008 schedule and is looking for an opponent. Any Southeastern Conference teams interested in a road game?

Dan Nakaso, Honolulu Advertiser: A blessing in disguise, perhaps. About 90,000 homes in Hawaii lost their cable feeds for the Sugar Bowl with Hawaii trailing Georgia, 7-3. When service was restored, the Warriors trailed, 24-3.

Mark Snyder, Detroit Free Press: The mother of Michigan quarterback Ryan Mallett says her son hasn't decided if he will transfer.

Jean-Jacques Taylor, Dallas Morning News: The cradle of quarterbacks? It has to be Texas.

Shawn Windsor, Detroit Free Press: The final days of Lloyd Carr's run as Michigan coach were a lot like other days. Dull.

nice half assed shot at the sec. a) the likelihood of an sec team having an open date matching up with byu at this point is pretty damn slim. b) did you actually read the article, or just post it so you could mention that sec shit?? b/c the article says in plain english "Athletic director Tom Holmoe is on record saying his first priority for replacing Nevada would be a similar opponent — not another BCS team"

Penn State and Texas A&M is not good theater.

This is a weak analysis. In reality the Alamo Bowl was excellent theater. PSU roared back from a 14-0 deficit and stuffed TAMU at the goal line late in the fourth quarter.

Truth be told, no college football game would have had good ratings when matched against the Patriots pursuit of perfection on three networks.
