Notre Dame's Crewcut Gets No. 1 Ranking

A bumbling start has earned Notre Dame's Crewcut Charlie Weis the No. 1 spot on this week's Coaches Hot Seat rankings. Weis, whose team has rushed for minus-14 yards in three games, was No. 3 last week, but his team's impressive 38-0 loss at Michigan moved him into the top spot.

The graphic above, captured by TV Tan Line before Saturday's loss to the Wolverines, showed Weis' record in comparison to predecessor Tyrone Willingham, who was fired after his third season in South Bend. At the time, Notre Dame officials made the move in hopes of hiring Urban Meyer from Utah, but he bolted to Florida, leaving the Fighting Irish with Weis, who is under contract through 2015.

Arkansas' Houston Nutt was second in the rankings, with Arizona's Mike Stoops third and Syracuse's Greg Robinson fourth. In a bit of a surprise, Auburn's Tommy Tuberville moved into the fifth spot after being 101st last week.

Completing the top 10: Southern Methodist's Phil Bennett, Mississippi Madman Ed Orgeron, Tennessee's Phillip Fulmer, Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy and UCLA's Karl Dorrell.

Willingham has more wins in that graphic because it includes the first 3 games of this season for Weis compared to Willingham's full 3rd season. It's a comparison that means nothing.

Weis is bringing in the #1 recruiting class in the nation for 2008. There was a huge gap in recruiting resulting from the transition from Willinham to Weis.

Also, Weis has gone to 2 BCS bowls in his first 2 seasons. Willingham 0.

Let the ND-lovers vs. ND-haters comments commence...

I still think Weis is a better coach than Willingham. That said, if this crap continues next year, you bet he deserves the #1 ranking.

Wiz, you must be loving this.

All the Weis defenders out there are delusional. Sure he gives a nice talk at the press conferences - well at least until now since he now refuses to give them. That is unbelievable. The dude is a big fat bully. The other coaches dislike him, the players don't like him anymore either. He has lost the team and the coaches. It is a crisis beyond repair. He flashed his rings to get recruits, but they are bailing.....players are even escaping from him! Darius Walker must have seen it coming too. The whole thing is going to get ugly....well it is already pretty ugly. If I were a recruit. there is no way in heck I'd go to ND. The ship has sunk and ND is the laughing stock of all of college football.

I love it. When Weis loses this year, it's because of Ty's recruits. But when he was winning two years ago, it wasn't because of the recruits, it was that Weis is a "genius".

Basically, Weis can do no wrong.

Any college football fan has to love this. Wasn't it reported last year that he had a rift w/ Quinn?

Charlie Wies is a big fat jerk. Don't be dazzled by the superbowl rings...he was only one guy out of many. Apparently he was a weak link. I feel bad for the players who were taken in by Charlie the Charlatan. If you're a player, transfer, if you're a recruit, decommit now.
