Not a good week in Iowa City. First, receivers Anthony Bowman and Dominique Douglas were arrested on felony charges for allegedly racking up $2,016.76 worth of merchandise with unauthorized credit cards. Then backup quarterback Arvell Nelson turned himself in to authorities after an arrest warrant was issued for failure to appear in court on a driving-related charge.
If this wasn't bad enough, photos surfaced on Douglas' Facebook page of Iowa players with large amounts of cash and liquor bottles. Iowa associate athletic director Fred Mims confirmed to the Des Moines Register that the players in the photos are Hawkeyes.
The photos circulating are said to be of Douglas and Bowman — both 19-years-old — and Nelson, 18, with large amounts of money and liquor bottles.
Under Iowa law, Bowman and Douglas could face up to five years in jail and a fine up to $7,500. If the case is turned over to federal investigators, the penalty could result in a jail term of 10 years and a fine up to $250,000. At this point, only state charges have been filed. The investigation is ongoing and other people could be involved. Officials would not say whether that could include other athletes.
