Welcome to the 2006 Chile Bowl

The newest addition to the 2006 bowl lineup? Try the Chile Bowl. ESPN has given the state of New Mexico a $2 million line of credit to start the game, which would pit teams from the Mountain West and Western Athletic conferences. University Stadium in Albuquerque would be the site of the game, which would be played before Christmas. The parties involved will make their case to the NCAA bowl licensing committee April 27 in Orlando, but from all indications this game — the 29th in the Division I postseason lineup — will get the stamp of approval, especially considering that ESPN also owns and operates the Las Vegas, Fort Worth and Hawaii bowls. The fledgling bowl doesn't officially have a name yet, but local officials are pushing for a title with a New Mexico flavor. Albuquerque Tribune reporter Iliana Limon, who has taken to calling the proposed game the Chile Bowl, is asking readers to name the game in her blog.
