In Memory of Steve Grayson

A great person and one of the best photographers ever. Committed to the craft, he was fearless in the field, yet sensitive to those around him. Steve was based in L.A. and was part of local history, closing the Herald Examiner before shooting sports for Wire Image and other clients. He was planning to teach and give back to the community. Steve died last week of an apparent heart attack. You'll be missed, my friend.

As posted in comments, there is also a message thread at Sports Shooter.

Also worked around him at several events here in SoCal. Nice guy that will be missed. Always took the time to say hello and answer any question you had.

Whether on the picture desk, walking around the golf course, or working on the sidelines at a football game, Steve Grayson was always a welcome addition to the day. It's hard to imagine the world without his smile.

Dear Steve...
I got the news of your passing and still can't believe it. I kept hoping that maybe it was some kind of a mixup or a mistake. But now I've confirmed that it's true. When working on assignments, I always hoped to see your face and to know that you were there. Seeing you put a smile on my face, stirred up a chuckle and placed my heart at ease. You were a helpful mentor, a friend and someone that was cared about very much. Your sarcasm didn't even phase me; I saw the heart of you. I hope that all is well with you now and that you are forever at ease and in God's loving arms.

Sincerely...
Your Friend
p.s. Thank you for all of your help, for being there and being a consistent friend. Love You!

I loved this guy. He was one of the first people I introduced to ex-wife when I met her.

I got along with the guy so well I lent him an F2 Nikon for 6 months back in the 80s.

You could trust him with anything. I knew him fairly well, and we rapped about just about everything.

I knew Steve from working the local papers in So. Central, we we're from the same parts, and I can say he didn't have an ounce of prejudice in him. He saw people for people. Beautiful guy.

He loved photography also.

My favorite photographer friend in the world. I'm coming in from out of town to pay respects.

I met Steve while shooting a special event a couple of years ago, I ran out of film and he was standing next to me, he saw what happened and immediately offered assistance by handing me a roll from his bag. We became friends and eventually he stopped shooting events and went to sports, he told me sports was his love and passion. I was shocked to learn of his passing, the world has lost a really great human being.

Steve,
was a good guy, a very caring individual who pursued his love of photography with passion and zest. A knowledgeable guy who always lent a helping hand. I was shocked to learn of his untimely passing, he was so full of vigor and life, his spirit will live with us all who really knew him. Thank you Steve in allowing me to have known you.

Wow, this is totally mind blowing. I spoke with Steve through email in November and December and we talked about getting together to hang out. Back in the day both of us loved to club. We planned on just spending some time hanging out. Imagine my surprise when looking for an address for him I find this.

Devastating to say the least. RIP Steve, you helped me get into the business and I won't forget how great a person you were.
