Meet Turner Gill, Nebraska's New Coach

Well, at least not yet. But Turner Gill, the former Nebraska quarterback and assistant coach, is already having to answer questions about the Cornhusker job.

Gill took over the Buffalo program two years ago and has a 5-14 record, which if we're not mistaken, makes him the winningest coach in Bull history.

Of course, Gill, who played for new Nebraska "interim" athletic director Tom Osborne, is saying all the right things when asked about a return to Lincoln.

"My heart and soul is right here at the University at Buffalo. My purpose is to bring this program up, that’s why I came here. It’s for our student athletes, for our students, our faculty, our alumni and everybody in Western New York. This is my passion. That’s what I’m all about."

OK, fine. Now let's review the financials. Gill, signed through 2011, has an annual salary of $180,000. Callahan is pulling down around $1.6 million.

Other names being tossed about include Texas Christian's Gary Patterson and Louisiana State defensive coordinator Bo Pelini.

I'll admit that I am a stranger to Nebraska (and Navy) football, but how can Paul Johnson not be a leading candidate for that job?

I would put Paul Johnson as my number one pick and been born and raised to love Nebraska.

I've been a Navy fan for several years only because of Johnson. He his everything the Huskers need in a coach.

I think Turner Gill is a great coach, but let him hone his craft at Buffalo for a few more years. I mean don't the bulls deserve to win the MAC conference once. Actually with Turner at Buffalo, and Solich at Ohio, if Callahan does get fired, maybe he can take over Eastern Michigan, and Kevin Cosgrove can take over Kent State. Change the MAC from the Mid American conference to the Mostly All Cornhuskers.

I think Turner Gill would be a great selection. Being a Quarterback, he would have a lot to offer the present quarterback.
The 12th man on a team is called deception and the Huskers don't seem to have him anymore.

If Turner get's the head coach job, I hope it's not based on U of Buffalo. Bo Pelini has two LARGE references: 1) The Green Bay Packers, and 2) LSU (Has national Top-10 ranking). But Bo ACTUALLY HAS BEEN the Nebraska coach! (remember the Alamo....Alamo Bowl that is).

Hey guys come on...Turner Gill seriously yeah he's done a fantastic job at buffalo BUT... He can't compete at this high of level. Bo on the other hand can look at his track record had Neb defense in the top when he was here then he takes lsu's defense turns them into a dominating force.

hey yeah folks Bo won the Alamo Bowl and If I am not mistaken Bo's so called dominating force at LSU has crumbled at the end of every season anyone can do what he has done with the talent at LSU. Gill on the other hand had to work to get his wins at Buffalo with less that average talent. Plus lets not forget Gill is the one that coached up that strong safety named Scott Frost to be a QB and on yeah Member a guy named Frazier and Crouch those guys loved Gill As a coach. My choice goes to Gill. More big red ties then any of the other candidates. He will give his all to bring them back to greatness.

Turner Gill need not hone his craft, he is an excellent coach, recruiter, and individual. He is also the 2007 MAC coach of the year. He understands the Nebraska program and what it means to be the head coach there. I hope he is named to be the head coach in Lincoln.

fair or not, not sure a lot of NU fans would group BC & KC in that group known as Huskers......

Really, lets look at what has happenned since Dr Tom left. No feared offensive line, that by the fourth quarter had broken the other guys defense down so bad, my dead grand-mother could have rushed for 20 on a bad snap. What about the true blackshirts of old? What happened to the oft used skill of wrapping up on the tackle which seems to be used with some success by other teams. I grew up watching Husker football with Dr. Tom on the side. Skip the looking around just get Dr. Tom to move his office down the hall and to the right and take back the team.

Turner Gill is cut from the same cloth as Coach Osborne and Tony Dungy. Turner Gill is Coach Osborne, 30 years ago. Remember that Coach Osborne was "just" an assistant when he was promoted to the head coach's job at Nebraska.

Nebraska needs to hire Turner Gill.

On November 30th, I returned from a business trip to Baton Rogue LA. All the die-hard LSU fans are hoping of losing Pelini to Nebraska as a result of the defense's dismal to average performances YTD. As a graduate student a Nebraska, I met Turner Gill and believe he is the real deal...Unfortunately, I think Tom is going with Bo...
