The Game That Broke Racial Barriers

Sometimes, defining moments aren't realized for years or decades later. When USC traveled to Birmingham in 1970 to play Alabama, the Trojans became the first fully integrated team to play the Crimson Tide at Legion Field. With Sam Cunningham rumbling for 135 of USC's 485 rushing yards, the Trojans cruised to a 42-21 victory. Cunningham and the Trojans helped bring integration to the Alabama team, which a year later played USC in the L.A. Coliseum with its first black starter, defensive end John Mitchell.
