The Natives Are Restless in South Bend

Crewcut Charlie Weis was regarded as an offensive mastermind, but with Notre Dame off to an 0-2 start, some Fighting Irish fans are taking a skeptical look at their coach.

Patrons at the South Bend watering hole The Linebacker who watched Notre Dame stumble through a 31-10 loss at Penn State let their postgame concerns flow like beer.

"We got out-coached," Bob Couch, a resident of South Bend, told Mark Montieth of the Indianapolis Star. "Something's wrong. There's a problem there. I haven't figured it out. Whatever it is, you better figure it out real quick."

John Kruk, another South Bend resident, said: "Nothing against coach Weis, but he's supposed to be an offensive guru. I don't understand why our offense isn't doing that well."

Kruk added: "His offense has scored six points and they haven't scored a touchdown in two games. I can't blame the players for that."

John Scarbeck, another South Bend resident, wrote a letter to the South Bend Tribune. He questioned Weis' ability — or in this case inability — to recruit:

"If Weis's recruits continue to flop (including heralded RB Armando Allen and most of the offensive line), in this season and in the next one or two, the main question will be: when will N.D.'s board of trustees bite the bullet and buy out Weis's contract, which was foolishly extended through 2015. The vast majority of players on the field against [Georgia] Tech [a 33-3 loss at home] were recruited by Weis, and all have been coached by him."

Armando Allen is 2 games into his career. I think its a little early to call him a flop.

I wish I could talk to these guys who want Weis gone so soon. All these kids are young and starting college life, let's not call them flops. He also has recruitted the number 1 class in the nation coming in next year. Solid reporting out of the South Bend Trib.

Ok, I'll bite. First of all, any time you talk to fans in a sports bar after a loss like that, what else would they say? And second, yeah, most of the players out there are his players, but they're freshmen and sophomores. Willingham was a horrible recruiter after his first class, and the year Weis came in it was a lost class - hired after the season and he was still coaching with the Pats until January.

I'm not blaming Willingham, though. It's a rebuilding year but that shouldn't excuse the way the offense has looked so far. He needs to fix the problems now. Weis didn't want to call it a rebuilding year and apparently the media isn't going to give ND slack about rebuilding either, but it's the truth. Most ND fans knew it was going to be tough - just not this tough. Michigan, however, was supposed be a title contender...

Weis absolutely said this was NOT a rebuilding year. He also denied Clausen had an arm problem and that he was ready to go for the first game. He also said football was a game of X's and O's that he was a master at and that he was here to win football games. The guy is a big fat liar (no pun intended). His lazy arse needs to be kicked out of town for coaching such a lazy football team. These are his players. Stop blaming Willingham for the 3rd year, no one blamed Faust for Holtz's 3rd year (oh, wait, that was the last national championship year), no one blamed Holtz for Davie's 3rd year, and no one blamed Davie for Willingham's 3rd year. Give it up. When an offensive genius has negative rushing yards after two games, it is coaching, period. And the players know that.

I know Weis said it wasn't a rebuilding year, but what I'm saying is that it IS. And yes, the offense is unacceptable, and yes it is coaching. I don't think Weis is some infallible God. However, I don't think it means he needs to be fired, although I'm sure he's feeling some heat after the ridiculous performance of the last two games. But every team has a rebuilding season when you don't have a full class to replace the departed seniors. While it probably wouldn't be as pathetic as ND's offense has been, any team that had to replace three offensive lineman, the quarterback, the starting running back, and both starting receivers would be in trouble.

when did the coaches start playing?? I missed that one.

Wow. Just...wow. Your disdain for the Irish knows no bounds. To cherry pick those uniformly negative comments is a gross misread of the outlook in South Bend.

The OL has been horrendous, but Clausen looked like anything but a feshman out there on Saturday, and if you think Armando Allen is a flop, you haven't been watching.

This year will be a mighty struggle, but just about every fan of ND is confident that the future is bright.

Blah blah blah....the "Irish" have been pinning their hopes on "next season" for 19 seasons. Give it up, the mystique is dead. Coaches don't even want to be a coach at Notre Dame anymore. Players should see that as a clear sign that success can't be had at ND even with the NBC home game coverage. If I were a great player, I'd go to a much better school than ND, just like the coaches. The freshman and sophomores weren't even alive during the last national championship season.....grandpa's ND is long dead and the "echoes" are gone. ND fans need to face this fact and stop whining.

Please stop making up excuses for Weiss. After the lack of class Notre Dame fans showed towards Willingham, this is pathetic. I thought his firing had something to do with them getting blown out of big games. I don't think he ever got blown out by Georgia Tech, or the equivalent. There are plenty of coaches who have done much better than Weiss with inferior talent

Face it Notre Dame, the echoes are dead and your coach is fat.

good thing you know better than chuck. TW should never be mentioned in the same breath with "ND recruiting" he was fired over 3 years ago.

the fascination with ND and TW just amazes me, its like a guy still talking about a girl that dumped him, three years later.

Weis has never been a head coach. Maybe he isn't a good head coach?

These two dudes in the article aren't even associated with UND, they're average Joe's on the street. To call Armando a flop two games into his career is plain foolish. The O-line has one Senior in the two deep (3 Juniors, 3 Soph and 2 Frosh). Give em time folks...

You kids are right, Notre Dame fired TW because of race. And it was done maliciously. They purposly went out and found a black head coach, just so they could make a fool of him in 3 years and fire him. Thank God they got lucky enough that he was doing a lousy job coaching and recruiting. By the way, i'm black and A PSU fan. I"m also smart enough to do research before i open my mouth. For those intellectually challanged. The first 4 lines were sarcasm.

ND is doing the same thing to obese people too to treat them a lesson. They went out and hired one of the most obese successful coach in college football, fooled him into a 10 year contract, let him lose 4 in a row and is waiting to fire him just to show they are better than obese people. Word on the street is ND wants to teach women a lesson next and is looking to hire the first female head football coach....I hear Condi Rice is in the running, but I hope she is smart enough to say "no"........

Did you read about the Patriots possible cheating scandal? Wonder if Weis was involved with that when he was there...the ESPN article seems to indicate that he was. Any organization that is ultra controlling, like the Patriots, is always suspect.....and Weis is using the same m.o. at ND. Hmmmm..... Hope the "offensive genius" isn't only good by cheating.....

Demetrius Jones didn't really quick the team...that was a cover story ND put out. The truth is, Charlie Weis ate him....
